Replacing tuners

Guitar tuners on a guitar

Replacing your tuners can greatly improve how long your guitar stays in tune and some types of tuners can cut the amount of time it takes to change strings drastically.

What you'll need

  • Screwdriver
  • Strings
  • Tuning pegs

Step 1 – Make sure the new tuning pegs are the same size as the old ones

Different guitar manufacturers use different size holes for tuning pegs, so it’s highly recommended that you double check the new tuning pegs you have are the right size for your guitar before you start removing parts.

Step 2 – Remove the strings

Start by turning the tuning peg to loosen off the string. When the string is loose enough, you should be able to pull the string out of the hole in the tuning peg, but you may have to untie it. Follow the string down to the bridge and remove it. Remember where you remove it from as you’ll need to pull the new strings through the same place.

Step 3 – Remove the old tuning pegs

Turn over your guitar and you should see on the back of the tuning pegs are screws. Using a screwdriver, unscrew each tuning peg from the head and remove the tuning peg from the guitar. Keep them in a safe place in case you ever want to use them again.

Step 4 – Put on the new tuning pegs

Place the new tuning pegs in the same positions as the old ones and screw them in.

Step 5 – Restring the guitar

Put new strings on the guitar. If you’re unsure of how to, check out how to change strings.

You now have new tuning pegs! They should keep your guitar in tune for longer.
